About Gerard David

Among the last great masters of Early Netherlandish painting, he carried the meticulous oil technique of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling into the early sixteenth century, working primarily in Bruges after arriving there from the northern Netherlands around 1484. His devotional panels are quieter than his predecessors' - softer light, more contemplative faces, landscapes that breathe behind the figures. Works like the Virgin Among the Virgins and his Annunciation scenes show a painter unhurried by the coming Renaissance, more interested in stillness than spectacle. For viewers drawn to the patient detail of Flemish primitives, his images reward long looking and quiet rooms.
