About Cornelis Claesz Van Wieringen

Few painters did more to invent Dutch marine painting as a genre than this Haarlem-born artist, who worked in the early seventeenth century when the young Republic was busy mythologizing its sea power. Trained initially as a sailor, he brought a working knowledge of rigging and weather to canvases that other painters had to fake, and his dramatic Battle of Gibraltar, commissioned by the Amsterdam Admiralty, became a template for naval history painting across Europe. His seascapes pair Mannerist drama with eyewitness accuracy: tall ships heeled in cannon smoke, skies that mean business. For anyone drawn to the romance of the age of sail, his work still feels immediate.
