About Franz Von Defregger

Few painters captured Tyrolean village life with the warmth and specificity of this nineteenth-century Austrian master, who built an entire career around the farmers, shepherds, and peasant children of his Alpine homeland. Born in 1835 to a South Tyrolean farming family, he trained at the Munich Academy under Karl von Piloty and became a leading figure of the Munich School, where his genre scenes earned him a professorship in 1878. His portraits sit comfortably between sentiment and dignity, treating rural subjects with the seriousness usually reserved for aristocrats. For collectors drawn to regional character, traditional dress, and finely observed faces, his work still rewards a long look.
