About Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

The son and chief collaborator of Giambattista Tiepolo, he spent decades absorbing the elder painter's grand Venetian manner before stepping decisively out of its shadow. Born in Venice in 1727, he worked alongside his father on the great fresco cycles at Würzburg and Madrid, then returned home to develop a sharper, more wryly observed sensibility of his own. His Punchinello drawings and the frescoes at the Villa Valmarana show a draftsman fascinated by gesture, theater, and the slightly absurd theater of religious and mythological convention. For viewers today, his drawings and prints offer the pleasure of a Rococo eye tempered by genuine wit and unsentimental observation.
