About Felix Ziem

Few nineteenth-century French painters chased light across as many shorelines as this restless traveler, whose Venetian lagoons and Mediterranean harbors made him one of the great colorists of the Barbizon generation. Born in Beaune in 1821, he trained as an architect before turning to paint, and his loose, atmospheric handling of water and sky anticipated Impressionism by a full decade. Monet himself collected his work. Beyond the famous Venice scenes, he painted Roman peasant women, Camargue wetlands, and rugged mountain views with the same sun-soaked palette. For contemporary viewers, his canvases offer the warmth of southern light without the postcard tidiness of academic painting.
