About Carl Reichert

Few nineteenth-century painters understood dogs the way this Austrian artist did. Working in Graz from the 1850s through the early 1900s, he built a long career on intimate, psychologically sharp animal portraits, particularly of dogs caught mid-thought: a dachshund tilting its head, a St. Bernard settling into stable straw, a hunting dog watching something just beyond the frame. He sometimes signed his work "J. Hartung," and his approach owed something to the Biedermeier taste for warmth and domestic detail. For anyone who has ever talked to a dog as though it understood, his paintings still feel uncannily right - affectionate without sentimentality, and observed with real attention.
