About Edward Penfield
Often called the father of the American poster, he turned magazine advertising into a serious graphic art form during the 1890s. As art director at Harper's from 1891 to 1901, he produced a monthly run of posters whose flat color blocks, confident outlines, and unhurried, slightly aloof figures defined the look of the American Gilded Age. He absorbed lessons from Japanese woodblock prints and the French affichistes but kept a distinctly Yankee sensibility - tweedy collegians, well-dressed women, horses, coaching scenes. His designs read instantly across a room, which is exactly what they were built to do, and that graphic clarity still feels modern on a wall today.
