About Paul Cesar Helleu
Few draughtsmen of the Belle Époque captured fashionable women with the same nervous, fluent line. Working primarily in drypoint and pastel, he could suggest the tilt of a hat, the curve of a bare neck, or the rustle of a high collar with just a handful of marks. A close friend of John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini, he became the preferred portraitist of Parisian society from the 1880s onward, sketching figures like Consuelo Vanderbilt with an intimacy that photographs of the era rarely managed. For anyone drawn to the elegance of pre-war Paris, his portraits remain among its most fluent records.
