About Jozef Israels

Often called the Dutch Millet, this nineteenth-century painter (1824-1911) built his reputation on quiet, weighty scenes of fisherfolk, peasants, and elderly figures caught in moments of labor or contemplation. After early training in Amsterdam and Paris, he settled into the loose, tonal manner that would define the Hague School, the movement he effectively led alongside Anton Mauve and the Maris brothers. His handling owes something to Rembrandt's shadowed interiors and something to French Realism's social conscience. For viewers today, the appeal is the seriousness without sentimentality - ordinary people rendered with the gravity usually reserved for history painting.
