About Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky

Few painters have understood water the way this nineteenth-century Russian Romantic did. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and appointed official painter to the Russian Navy, he produced some six thousand seascapes across his career, working largely from memory rather than direct observation. His method of layering thin, translucent glazes gave waves an inner luminosity that contemporaries called impossible to reproduce, and his 1850 canvas The Ninth Wave remains one of the most reproduced marine paintings in the world. For anyone drawn to weather, light on water, or the older Romantic tradition of the sublime, his work still holds its charge.
