About Amadeo De Souza Cardoso

Portugal's great modernist gamble, dead at thirty from the 1918 flu before the world caught up with him. Working in Paris from 1906, he absorbed Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism without surrendering to any of them, building a visual language of flattened planes, hot color and almost folkloric pattern. He showed alongside Modigliani and Brâncuși, and his work appeared in the 1913 Armory Show in New York, putting a Portuguese painter inside the founding event of American modernism. A century later, his canvases still feel restless and graphic, equal parts avant-garde experiment and Iberian decorative instinct - work that reads as confidently contemporary on a wall today.
