About Francesco Solimena

Few painters dominated late Baroque Naples the way this one did. Working from the 1670s through the 1740s, he inherited the dramatic lighting of Mattia Preti and the compositional grandeur of Luca Giordano, then refined both into something cooler and more architectural. His altarpieces and mythological scenes are built on tightly choreographed groupings of figures, theatrical gesture, and a velvety chiaroscuro that pulls the eye exactly where he wants it. He trained a generation of painters who carried his style across Europe, including Francesco de Mura and Sebastiano Conca. For modern viewers, his work offers the full operatic intensity of the Italian Baroque without the chaos.
