About Jean Jacques Henner

Few nineteenth-century painters built a career on a single chromatic obsession quite like this Alsatian master of red hair against shadow. Born in 1829 in Bernwiller, he won the Prix de Rome in 1858 and spent formative years studying Titian and Correggio, whose sfumato softened the edges of everything he painted afterward. His female figures - whether intimate portraits of family or his recurring redheaded nudes emerging from velvety darkness - became instantly recognizable in the Paris Salons of the 1870s and 80s. For modern viewers, the appeal is the quiet drama: skin that seems lit from within, surrounded by deep, almost photographic darkness.
