About Narcisse Virgile Diaz De La Pena

One of the original Barbizon painters, he brought a jewel-toned, almost Romantic sensibility to a school better known for its sober realism. Born in Bordeaux in 1807 to Spanish parents, he started out painting porcelain before turning to landscapes and figure work, eventually settling near Fontainebleau alongside Théodore Rousseau, who became a close friend and influence. His forest interiors flicker with dappled light; his nymphs and bohemiennes carry a sensuous, slightly theatrical charge that sets him apart from his more austere colleagues. For viewers drawn to nineteenth-century French painting but tired of the obvious choices, his canvases offer warmth, mystery, and genuine painterly pleasure.
