About Louis Leopold Boilly

Few painters captured the texture of everyday French life across so much political upheaval. Working from the 1780s into the 1840s, he painted his way through the Ancien Régime, the Revolution, Napoleon, and the Bourbon Restoration, and he is the artist who gave the French language the word trompe-l'œil, coining it for his own illusionistic pictures. His real gift was portraiture and genre scenes: actors, children, painters in their studios, women at the mirror, all rendered with a sharp eye for fabric, gesture, and social nuance. For a contemporary viewer, his small, intimate canvases still feel surprisingly alive, closer to candid photography than to grand history painting.
