About Church, Frederic Edwin

Among the second generation of the Hudson River School, he pushed American landscape painting toward something closer to scientific spectacle. A student of Thomas Cole in the mid-1840s, he absorbed his teacher's reverence for wild nature but traded Cole's allegorical bent for meticulous observation, fueled by his readings of Alexander von Humboldt and travels through South America, the Arctic, and the Middle East. Paintings like Heart of the Andes and Twilight in the Wilderness drew crowds who paid admission to see them. His skies still feel like weather you can read - charged with atmosphere, light, and the strange intelligence of the natural world watching back.
