About Melchior De Hondecoeter

Few painters have ever owned a subject quite the way this seventeenth-century Dutchman owned birds. Working in Amsterdam during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, he turned the painted poultry yard into something closer to theatre, staging pelicans, peacocks, swans and exotic imports in dramas of feather and posture that doubled as quiet meditations on the reach of the Dutch trading empire. Trained by his father Gijsbert and his uncle Jan Baptist Weenix, he developed a feel for plumage so precise that later naturalists could identify species from his canvases. The pictures still work because the birds still feel alive - alert, vain, faintly ridiculous, entirely themselves.
