About Louise Howland King Cox

Trained at the Art Students League in New York in the late 1880s, she studied under Kenyon Cox, whom she married in 1892, and built a quietly serious career as a portraitist of children and young women at a time when American academic painting was at its high point. Working in oil with a soft, restrained palette, she favored contemplative single-figure compositions that owe something to the Renaissance pictures her husband revered. For a contemporary viewer, her portraits offer what so much modern figurative work has lost: stillness, dignity, and an unhurried gaze that rewards living with the picture rather than glancing at it.
