About Philippe Mercier

Born in Berlin in 1689 to French Huguenot parents, this painter trained in the German and Italian academies before settling in London around 1716, where he became principal painter to Frederick, Prince of Wales. He is the figure most often credited with introducing the fête galante to British painting, adapting Watteau's intimate outdoor reveries for English patrons and pivoting later toward domestic genre scenes of children, servants, and quiet household moments. That second career, painting maids with tea trays or boys in costume, is where his real charm lives. It is eighteenth-century life caught off-guard, observant and unfussy, and it still reads as quietly modern.
