About Sir Henry Raeburn

Scotland's great portraitist of the Enlightenment, he painted his sitters straight from life with no preliminary drawing - a bold approach in the 1780s that gave his work its directness and weight. Working from his Edinburgh studio, he captured the lawyers, lairds and Highland chiefs of a country reinventing itself, often lit from a single high window to model the face in firm planes of light and shadow. Knighted in 1822 during George IV's visit to Edinburgh, he became Scotland's answer to Reynolds and Gainsborough. His portraits still feel surprisingly modern - psychologically alert, unfussy, more interested in the person than the costume.
