About Paul Fischer

Few painters captured the leisurely summer life of late nineteenth-century Denmark with the easy authority of this Copenhagen-born artist (1860–1934). Trained at the Royal Danish Academy, he became the country's foremost chronicler of urban street scenes and sun-drenched beach gatherings, working in a bright, plein-air idiom that absorbed French Impressionist lessons without ever losing its distinctly Danish reserve. His Falsterbo bathing scenes remain among the defining images of the Scandinavian belle époque. What makes his work hold up today is its quiet sociability. These are paintings about people enjoying ordinary good weather together, rendered with enough warmth and enough restraint to keep them from tipping into nostalgia.
