About Jessie Willcox Smith

Few illustrators understood childhood the way she did. A student of Howard Pyle at Drexel and a central figure in the Brandywine school, she built a career on quiet, observed moments - a child reading, a mother bending close, the particular concentration of small hands at play. Her work filled the covers of Good Housekeeping for fifteen straight years, from 1917 to 1932, and her illustrations for Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses remain her best-loved commission.
