About Blasco De Granen

Active in Aragon during the first half of the fifteenth century, this Zaragoza-based painter ran one of the busiest workshops in the kingdom, producing large gilded altarpieces in the International Gothic style that dominated Iberian devotional art before the Flemish influence took hold. His panels are recognizable for their patterned gold grounds, elongated figures, and richly tooled surfaces, with the Altarpiece of Saint John the Baptist a fine example of his narrative approach to saints' lives. He trained alongside or under Bonanat Zahortiga and shaped a generation of Aragonese painters. For modern viewers, his work offers the ornamental intensity of medieval devotion at its most decorative.
