About Emil Nolde
Few painters pushed color as hard as this German Expressionist, who treated pigment like weather - storms of violet and ochre, skies that seem to bruise. Born in 1867 on the Danish-German border, he was briefly a member of Die Brücke alongside Schmidt-Rottluff and Kirchner, though he was always too solitary, too religious in temperament, to stay in any group for long. His watercolors of gardens and seascapes remain his most beloved work, loose washes that feel almost reckless until you notice the structure underneath. For a contemporary room, his paintings bring a kind of saturated intensity that flat modern walls genuinely need.
