About Jan Provoost

Working in Bruges at the turn of the sixteenth century, this Flemish painter inherited the meticulous oil technique of Jan van Eyck and Gerard David while letting in the softer atmospheric warmth that was creeping north from the Italian Renaissance. Active from around 1490 until his death in 1529, he became the leading master of Bruges after David's departure for Antwerp, producing devotional panels marked by clear-eyed portraiture and an unusually tender treatment of the Virgin. For a contemporary viewer, his paintings reward close looking: jewel-bright drapery, patient surface detail, and faces that feel observed from life rather than copied from convention.
