About Vincenzo Carducci

Born in Florence around 1576 but raised in Spain from childhood, this painter became one of the central figures of the Madrid school under Philip III and Philip IV, eventually inheriting the court painter post from his older brother Bartolomé. Trained in the late Italian Mannerist tradition, he gradually absorbed the sober naturalism that defined Spanish Counter-Reformation painting, most visible in his Carthusian cycle for El Paular. He also wrote Diálogos de la Pintura in 1633, a defense of painting as a liberal art. For viewers today, his religious compositions offer that distinctive Spanish blend of theatrical drama and grounded human gravity that influenced everyone who came after.
