About William Brassey Hole

Born in Salisbury in 1846 and raised in Edinburgh, this Scottish painter and etcher built his reputation on biblical and historical subjects rendered with an archaeologist's eye. He travelled to Palestine in the 1890s to study the landscape and architecture firsthand, and the resulting illustrations for The Life of Jesus of Nazareth and Old Testament History became some of the most widely circulated devotional images of the late Victorian era. A member of the Royal Scottish Academy, he was equally skilled with the etching needle, working in the tradition of Whistler and the Scottish etching revival. His religious scenes still read as quietly studied rather than theatrical - reverent without being saccharine.
