About Edvard Munch

Few artists wrung as much psychological weather out of paint as the Norwegian Symbolist who, in 1893, gave the modern world its definitive image of anxiety in The Scream. Working through the 1880s and 90s, he treated canvases like confessions, building his Frieze of Life cycle around love, illness, jealousy and grief, often returning to the same motifs for decades. His loose, emotive handling and acidic colour fed directly into German Expressionism, shaping Kirchner, Nolde and the Brücke painters who followed. What still pulls viewers in today is his honesty about interior life - quiet domestic scenes and self-portraits that feel startlingly contemporary in their unease.
