About Lucas Cranach The Elder

Court painter to the Electors of Saxony for nearly half a century, he built one of the most productive workshops of the German Renaissance and shaped the visual identity of the Protestant Reformation. A close friend of Martin Luther, he painted the reformer repeatedly, while also turning out the sinuous, almond-eyed nudes that became his signature: Eves, Lucretias, and Venuses whose elongated bodies feel closer to Gothic refinement than Italian classicism. Active from the early 1500s until his death in 1553, he balanced sacred subjects with mythological eroticism in a way few contemporaries dared. His figures still read as strikingly modern, cool, deliberate, and quietly subversive.
