About Redon, Odilon

Few nineteenth-century artists made the inner life feel as tangible as this French Symbolist, who spent two decades working almost exclusively in black before erupting into some of the most saturated color work of his era. His early charcoals and lithographs, which he called his "noirs," populated dream-spaces with floating eyes, severed heads, and watchful creatures drawn from mythology and his own unconscious. Born in 1840 and active until 1916, he became a quiet patron saint for the Surrealists who followed. The mythological subjects he returned to throughout his career, including Orpheus and Pandora, still read as strange, interior, and unsettlingly modern.
