About George Luks

Few American painters threw themselves at urban life with the appetite of this Pennsylvania-born brawler, who traded newspaper illustration for the easel and helped invent a distinctly American realism. A founding member of The Eight, the group that mounted the 1908 exhibition challenging the genteel academy, he painted immigrant children, street vendors, and tenement scenes with thick, fast brushwork inherited from Hals and Manet. The Ashcan School took its cue from his refusal to prettify. For today's viewer, his work cuts through nostalgia. These are real faces in real weather, painted by someone who clearly preferred a saloon to a salon, and the energy still reads on the canvas.
