About Louis Anquetin
Working in 1880s Paris alongside Toulouse-Lautrec, Émile Bernard and Van Gogh, this French painter helped invent Cloisonnism — flat planes of saturated color bounded by dark contours, borrowed in spirit from stained glass and Japanese prints. Avenue de Clichy, painted in 1887, became the movement's calling card and a direct influence on Gauguin's Synthetist turn. He later abandoned the avant-garde to study Rubens and the old masters, a move that puzzled his contemporaries and pushed him to the margins of art history. For viewers today, his early street scenes and portraits read as a missing link between Impressionism and what came next.
