About Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraten

Working in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, this Dutch painter carved out a specialty most of his contemporaries left alone: dramatic naval battles and ice-bound winter scenes, often rendered under heavy, theatrical skies. Active from the 1640s until his death in 1666, he belonged to the generation that followed Hendrick Vroom in establishing marine painting as a serious Dutch genre, and his views of castles and Mediterranean ports show a painter equally at home on land. The appeal now is the same as it was then - a sense of weather, scale, and incident that pulls you into a specific moment of Dutch Golden Age life rather than a generic seascape.
