About Kobayashi Kiyochika

Working in Tokyo as the city electrified and modernized in the 1870s and 80s, he became the great chronicler of Meiji-era twilight. His kosen-ga, or "ray-line prints," brought a Western sense of atmospheric light and shadow into the woodblock tradition, capturing gas lamps glowing on wet pavement, steam trains crossing the night, and the moon filtered through coal smoke. Trained partly under the British cartoonist Charles Wirgman, he later turned his eye to wartime subjects during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese conflicts. For a contemporary viewer, his prints feel startlingly cinematic - quiet, moody studies of a city caught between lantern light and the modern grid.
