About Alfred Maurer
Among the first American modernists, he made the leap from polished tonalist figure painting to full-blown Fauvist experimentation after settling in Paris in 1897 and falling into the orbit of Gertrude and Leo Stein. His early Whistlerian scenes of cafés and Parisian nightlife earned him medals and a comfortable reputation, all of which he willingly torched around 1905 to chase the radical color of Matisse. He returned to New York in 1914 and spent his later years on raw, anxious portraiture that prefigured American Expressionism. For viewers today, his work captures the precise moment American art decided to stop looking polite.
