About Jan Van Eyck

Few painters changed what oil paint could do quite so completely. Working in Bruges in the 1430s, this Early Netherlandish master refined oil glazing into something the Italians wouldn't match for decades, building luminous depth layer by translucent layer. The Ghent Altarpiece and the Arnolfini Portrait remain his signature achievements, but his smaller panels reveal the same patient precision: every hair, every brass rivet, every distant landscape rendered with near-microscopic attention. He died in 1441, having essentially invented Northern Renaissance realism. For modern viewers, the appeal is the quiet astonishment of looking closely and discovering yet another detail you hadn't noticed before.
