About George Hayward

Working in mid-nineteenth-century New York, this English-born lithographer made his reputation documenting a city in the middle of becoming itself. Active from roughly the 1830s through the 1870s, he produced detailed topographical views and street scenes for D.T. Valentine's Manuals of the Corporation of the City of New York, the municipal yearbooks that became the visual record of antebellum Manhattan and Brooklyn. His prints of Catharine Market, the Fulton ferries, and the Brooklyn waterfront capture wooden warehouses, sailing rigs, and market crowds with an almost journalistic eye. For viewers today, these are time machines - a chance to see New York before the skyline, when the East River still defined the city.
