About New

This appears to be Albertus Del Orient Browere (1814-1887), an American landscape painter whose work bridged Hudson River School romanticism and the rougher visual language of the California Gold Rush. Trained partly under his father, the sculptor John Henri Isaac Browere, he made his name with Catskill scenes before heading west in 1852, where he produced some of the earliest serious paintings of mining camps and Sierra terrain. He moved between coasts for the rest of his life, returning to the Catskills to paint. His landscapes carry a working artist's eye for weather, light, and the human marks left on wild country - quietly observed rather than theatrical.
