About Georges Seurat
Few painters have ever been as systematic as this French Post-Impressionist, who built his canvases dot by dot from tiny, deliberate points of pure colour. The technique, which he called Divisionism (the world now mostly knows it as Pointillism), was grounded in nineteenth-century colour theory: optical mixing in the viewer's eye rather than on the palette. Working from the early 1880s until his death at just 31 in 1891, he produced a small but radical body of work that pushed Impressionism toward something cooler, more architectural, almost mathematical. The stillness and quiet structure of his scenes feel surprisingly modern on a wall today.
