About Charles De Wolf Brownell

A nineteenth-century American landscape painter with an unusually patient eye, he belonged to the second generation of the Hudson River School but ranged far beyond the Catskills. Born in Rhode Island in 1822, he trained originally for law before turning to painting full-time, and his travels through Cuba, Central America, and the Mediterranean gave his work a wider geographic reach than most of his peers. He had a particular reverence for historic trees and tropical light, rendering both with a botanist's accuracy. For contemporary viewers, his canvases offer something increasingly rare: meticulous, unhurried observation of specific places at specific moments, painted before photography flattened the impulse.
