About Giampietrino

Among the closest followers of Leonardo da Vinci, this Lombard painter absorbed the master's sfumato and soft modeling more thoroughly than almost anyone in the Milanese circle. Active in the first half of the sixteenth century, he is now generally identified with Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, and his hand is recognizable in the half-length Madonnas, penitent Magdalenes, and sensuous Cleopatras that became his stock in trade. He also produced one of the most important early copies of the Last Supper, preserving details since lost from Leonardo's original. For a viewer today, his paintings offer the quiet intimacy of the Leonardesque tradition without the museum-glass distance of the master himself.
