About John George Brown

Few nineteenth-century American painters built a career as singular as his: the bootblacks, newsboys, and street children of post-Civil War New York, rendered with the sharp finish of an English-trained academic. Born in Durham in 1831 and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy before settling in New York in 1853, he became one of the most commercially successful genre painters of the Gilded Age, his urchins reproduced endlessly in chromolithographs that hung in middle-class parlors across America. The appeal still holds. These are small social documents disguised as sentiment, painted by someone who clearly studied his subjects on the actual sidewalks of lower Manhattan.
