About Bilderbuch

The name on the spine of one of the nineteenth century's strangest natural history compendiums, Bilderbuch für Kinder was a German illustrated encyclopedia for children published by Friedrich Justin Bertuch between 1790 and 1830. Its twelve volumes gathered hand-colored copperplate engravings of animals, plants, antiquities and curiosities, rendered with the precise, slightly fantastical naturalism of late Enlightenment science. The colossal octopus plate is among its most haunting images, a sea monster drawn with the conviction of fact.
