About Jaime Huguet

Among the last great masters of the Catalan Gothic, this fifteenth-century painter held court in Barcelona from roughly the 1450s onward, running the busiest workshop in the city and shaping the visual language of altarpieces across Aragon. His figures carry a particular gravity - elongated, soft-eyed saints set against tooled gold grounds, robes built up in delicate punchwork and glazed reds that still glow. The Consecration of Saint Augustine, painted for the tanners' guild, shows him at full strength: ceremonial, jewel-toned, quietly human. For modern viewers drawn to medieval devotional art with real warmth rather than stiffness, his panels remain some of the most inviting work of the period.
