About Aubrey Vincent Beardsley

Few artists have done more with pure black ink than this prodigy of the English fin de siècle, who turned line itself into a kind of decadent music. Working in stark blacks and whites with vast empty fields and sinuous, attenuated figures, he became the defining visual voice of the 1890s Aesthetic movement before tuberculosis killed him at twenty-five. His illustrations for Wilde's Salome and the short-lived Yellow Book scandalized Victorian London and fed directly into Art Nouveau across the Continent. The work still reads as startlingly modern: graphic, witty, slightly wicked, and unmistakable from across a room.
