About Carl Bloch
Few nineteenth-century painters handled lamplight and shadow with the theatrical intelligence of this Danish master (1834-1890), whose religious scenes remain a touchstone of devotional art well over a century after his death. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy and shaped by years in Italy studying Rembrandt and the Italian masters, he found his calling in the twenty-three altarpiece-scale paintings for the Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle, a commission that consumed fourteen years of his life. What draws viewers back is his quiet psychological precision: the searching faces, the introspective gestures, the sense that something private is unfolding in sacred light. Reverent without being stiff.
