About Hans Canon

One of Vienna's leading portraitists of the Gründerzeit era, this nineteenth-century Austrian painter brought a bravura, almost theatrical touch to society portraiture at a moment when the Habsburg capital was reinventing itself. Trained partly under Karl Rahl and shaped by extensive travel through the Orient and Italy, he developed a loose, painterly handling indebted to Rubens and the Venetians rather than the tighter academic style of his Austrian contemporaries. His ceiling painting for the Vienna Natural History Museum, completed shortly before his death in 1885, remains his most ambitious public statement. For collectors drawn to rich, atmospheric portraiture with genuine old-master DNA, his work rewards close looking.
