About Edgar Degas
Though grouped with the Impressionists and central to their early exhibitions, he always preferred the label Realist. Where Monet chased light across haystacks, Degas worked indoors, drawn to the unguarded gesture: a dancer adjusting a slipper, a laundress mid-yawn, a woman stepping from her bath. His obsession with movement and oblique vantage points owed as much to Japanese prints and the new medium of photography as to his rigorous training under an Ingres disciple. For the contemporary viewer, his pastels and oils still feel startlingly modern, catching people exactly as they are when they think no one is watching.
