About Ralph Earl

Among the first generation of American portraitists, he carved out a particular niche painting the merchants, ministers, and landowners of post-Revolutionary Connecticut. Born in 1751 and trained partly in London under Benjamin West, he returned home with English polish but applied it to distinctly Yankee subjects, often setting his sitters against detailed New England landscapes glimpsed through parlor windows. His portraits hold a plain-spoken quality that separates them from his more flattering European-trained peers. Faces are direct, hands are working hands, fabrics are honestly observed. For modern viewers, the appeal is documentary as much as artistic: these are the people who actually built early America.
