About Henri De Toulouse Lautrec

Few artists embedded themselves in a scene the way this aristocrat-turned-bohemian embedded himself in Montmartre. Working in Paris through the 1890s, he treated dance halls, cafés-concerts, and brothels as his studio, sketching performers like Jane Avril and La Goulue with a line that was equal parts caricature and tenderness. His real innovation was bringing fine-art seriousness to commercial lithography, turning the cabaret poster into something worth collecting. Degas was a clear influence; the Japanese woodblock tradition was another. Look at the flat planes of color and the sly, observant draftsmanship and you can trace a direct line forward to Picasso, graphic design, and modern illustration.
